The Old Settlers Cemetery in Hovland, Minnesota, is the final resting place of generations of families that call the north shore area home. The first recorded burial took place here in 1896.
Take a look around and you’ll find little Ingeborg Jacobsen was just nine years old when she was buried that year. She’s buried with her father, Johan, who died two years later.
You’ll also wander by the grave of John Adams Spelman II and his children and grandchildren. John was a noted artist specializing in painting nature scenes. He lived in Oak Park, IL, but spent his summers on his property near Hovland. His son, John Adams Spelman III is also buried here. He was also a celebrated artist who created beautiful woodcuts.
You’ll find children and grandchildren of the original Eliasens, Jacobsens, Kuglers, Brays, and other area settlers.
